How Long Does It Take to Repair a Car After An Accident

July 15, 2024
Car that needs repair after an accident in NJ

We rely on our vehicles to get us from A to B conveniently. Otherwise, we often have to rely on friends, family members, and public transport. When disaster strikes and our vehicles are damaged in a collision, it’s only natural to question how long repairs will take so you can regain your independence once more.

There is no standard or set number of days, weeks, or months for a vehicle to be fixed. Instead, your vehicle repair time frame can depend on some of these factors:

Damage Severity

Damage severity can undoubtedly contribute to a long or short timeframe for vehicle repairs. For example, a small dent that only requires a paintless dent repair will take far less time than a full collision repair service in which you need body repair, paint, re-assembly, full detailing, and a quality check.

Talk to your local collision repair specialists about timeframes for minor, moderate, and major repairs. It’s not uncommon for minor repairs to take hours to a couple of days and for major repairs to take weeks.

Parts Availability

Our vehicles consist of many parts, which we expect vehicle manufacturers to carry. However, immediate parts availability isn’t always guaranteed. As a result, the ability of your chosen collision expert to access parts can sometimes determine your car repair timeline.

If parts are readily available, you may enjoy fast and efficient service. If parts are on backorder or coming from outside the country, you may need to wait a little longer. Rest assured, the most highly regarded auto body specialists will update you on what to expect.

Insurance Processes

If your vehicle repairs will be performed as part of an insurance claim, the insurance process may set the timeframe for repairs. As a general rule, insurance companies need to assess the damage and approve a repair estimate. This may take a few days or longer. Access insurance information from your chosen repair specialist.

Vehicle Type

Do you have a specialty, luxury, or imported vehicle? Your vehicle type can contribute to your repair timeline. Specialized parts may need to be imported from other countries. This may add extra days to your repair timeline.

When you book your vehicle in for repairs, talk to your local collision expert about parts availability. You may then be able to avoid unexpected surprises.

Collision Expert Workload

You only want the best of the best when it comes to collision experts. After all, you want to be sure that your vehicle is repaired to the highest of standards. Such experts can be in demand year-round.

The workload of your chosen collision expert can be a leading factor in how long it takes for your vehicle to be repaired. Most reputable collision repair service providers will provide timeframe estimates when you contact them about repairing your vehicle. You can then make an informed decision.

Unexpected Issues

While most vehicle damage is obvious after a thorough insurance assessment, there can sometimes be unexpected surprises once repairs are underway. The discovery of additional damage may mean your vehicle needs to stay with a collision repair provider for a little longer. Fortunately, most highly regarded businesses keep their customers informed when they encounter such issues!
